Marcus Hyett: Hydro Theory

Who are you?

I am Marcus Hyett, I build surfboards under my label Hydro Theory.

- What do you do?

I design, hand shape, glass and sand custom surfboards in Torquay which I have been doing for about 2 years now. Currently i am producing 2-3 boards a week.

- Where do you do it?

I work out of Maurice Cole's factory out the back of Bells Beach in Torquay. This is very handy when it comes to testing my designs.

- Where do you hope to take it?

I haven't actually asked myself this? Over the last 12 months I've been focused on honing my skills and making sure I'm delivering a good product. Now I'm starting to look at marketing and getting my name out there to get more orders coming in. I'm also in the process of redesigning my logo. I would love to have my own factory one day soon.

- Favourite Artist?

Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Foals, the Black Keys. Thats probably the kind of stuff I listen to mostly.

- Favourite Food?

My other passion in life. Don't make me choose one. Beer?

- Who Inspires you?

Ryan Burch and Daniel Thompson are two shapers who have been pushing the boundaries of surfboard design in recent years. Definitely both of them as well as Maurice Cole the madman who taught me to shape, whose boards I have always loved. I've been very lucky to learn from him.

- Most disliked Celebrity/Individual?

Pauline Hanson.

- What do you get up to in your down time?

Basically just surf and drink beers with friends.

- Any incriminating stories?

I once caught a petrol bowser on fire, that was silly. No more on that.

- Whats up and coming?

I'm currently in the process of turning a few of my 'magic' hand shaped boards into CAD files. This will mean that soon I will be able to have my boards shaped mostly by machine and then finished off by me which will cut down on a lot of time and also lead to a better product.

- Cactus Essential?

My Watersports tee is so fresh and so clean clean.

Jordan Trickey (Odessa)

Who are you?

Howdy, I’m Jordan Trickey. I’m an adventure photographer and I also do a little music under the name odessa.

- What do you do?

I devote the majority of my spare time to exploring new places, camping around Australia and capturing it’s diverse epicness with my camera.

- Where do you do it?

You name it - mountain tops, rainforests, beaches.

- Where do you hope to take it?

I just hope to keep having fun with it and possibly also evoke a greater respect for our environment in people who check my work out.

- Favourite Artist?

All time favourite band will forever be the Beastie Boys - such an influential group. In terms of visual art there’s this Polish artist named Pawel Kuczynski whose work depicts society’s injustices, which I find to be pretty much on point.

- Favourite Food?

Anything that comes from the ground is good with me!

- Most disliked Celebrity/Individual?

Big question, it’s hard to pinpoint just one so I’d have to say socialites in general are my most disliked group of people. It’s not that I hate them - I dislike that people idolise them, not for their accomplishments or for their high moral standing, but mostly just for their wealth and fame.

- What do you get up to in your down time?

Chilling with friends, going to shows, skating around, learning about new things. I dabble a little with music, I’m currently working on a EP which is quite time consuming.

- Any incriminating stories?

When I was a kid I was deeply obsessed with Eifel 65’s smash hit “I’m Blue”. One night I got home from school I noticed my old man was at work, so I figured I should turn it up past 11. In doing so I blew up his prized $3000 Infinity speakers. In hindsight the song was definitely not worth it.

- Whats up and coming?

More travel, working on a concept photo book of some travels i’m planning through Asia which should be fun.

- Cactus Essential?

The SS hoody keeps me fairly snug outside in Australia’s nippy climate.

The Razor Podcast (Sam Diamond)

- Who are you?

I am Sam Diamond, aka Sydney Van Smith, aka host of The Razor Podcast.

- What do you do?

I am a podcaster. I started the podcast about 4 months ago, and I’ve have the worlds most famous living philosopher, two rock stars, a rhodes scholar, the owner of the worlds best rock and roll bar, and a dating coach/ pick up artist. But I am also a musician, a lawyer, and work in funds management. I have my finger in a few different pies and get a lot of joy out of being creative.

- Where do you do it?

Mostly from my office in the CBD of Melbourne. Being a muso, I’ve pretty much built up all the equipment required for a studio, which has worked well and been very useful for my podcast. I also loiter around the coast and Geelong whenever I have the chance.

- Where do you hope to take it?

I would like to get to the point where I have thousands of listeners streaming my podcast every week. To be able to do that, I need to keep having really interesting guests and developing my own unique style.

The beauty of pod-cast’s is that I can say pretty much whatever I want, without fear of being fired or offending an advertiser, like in radio.

I really just want to keep improving, get really fascinating and diverse guests. If I do that, it will be interesting to listen to and who knows where it could lead.

- Favourite Artist?

Pink Floyd, John Lennon, and Jeff Buckley are my probably my favourite musicians. Salvador Dali is my favourite visual artist. Bill Hicks is my favourite comedian. In terms of podcasts, I am influenced by Joe Rogan (the JRE Experience) and Wil Anderson (Wilosophy).

- Favourite Food?

Indian - I love a good Lamb Vindaloo. Just have to watch out for the ring sting the next day.

- Most disliked Celebrity/Individual?

I could say Kim Jong-Un or members of ISIS, but that’s too easy. I dislike Senator Cory Bernardi. His views on marriage equality make him look like a genuine flog.

- What do you get up to in your down time?

I like going to music festivals and live gigs. Hanging out with friends and family. 420. I love training and keeping fit. Surfing. Rock climbing. Going around the twist.

 - Any incriminating stories?

Back in uni I took my 1982 yellow Volvo station wagon down a 4WD track near Geelong. I saw a large puddle that looked reasonably shallow. So I flogged the car thinking I could plough through it. The puddle turned out to be about a metre or so deep and it completely fucked the car. The Volvo was my dad’s pride and joy for sentimental reasons. He was not very happy when he found out, but it was fun at the time.

- Whats up and coming?

I am really excited about the next guest for the podcast: Robert Richter QC. He is arguably Australia’s most renowned criminal lawyer. Richter successfully defended Mick Gatto of the murder of underworld hitman Andrew Veniamin in 2005. Mick Gatto apparently has a tattoo that says “Robert Richter QC” on his chest. Richter is also a massive advocate for human rights, and he started Fitzroy Legal Service, where I practice during the night service.

- Cactus Essential?

The Cactus item I have is a black hoody that my friend Dean left at my house- which I essentially own now. I really do have to order one of the Summer Lovin’ bad boys though, they look very fresh.

NATURE VS NURTURE

Who are you?

Taz: G’day, I’m Taz. 20 years old. Grew up playing a lot of sport, played AFL for 7 years but recently decided to switch fields and immerse myself in different areas of interest. So now I’m studying Psychology and have taken up Djing and producing.

Lauren: I grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and went to Catholic Ladies College in Eltham for high school- I had the best years in this time, I had hobbies from having my own clothing label and getting on a current affair with it in year 8 all the way to playing in a band Avenida doing fun covers and some broken down mash ups in year 11 &12! My family then moved up to Whittlesea mid year 12, I love going home to visit every week still, its nice to be able to run around outside with my little brother (he’s 10) and see the horses and my cat; “meow-meow” which I adore.) I’m also currently studying Psychology and Gender Studies as well as working for Telstra.

 What do you do?

We are business partners for our brand Nature vs. Nurture. The main focus is DJing, but we hope to expand and add sub businesses that compliment our sound. Lauren is a singer so it comes natural to her to always push the boundaries. Music is a big part of our lives and we are really passionate about creating new music.

 Where do you do it?

We run everything from at home in Melbourne. There is a part of our wardrobe that opens up and has our tv and decks/speakers all compact in it.

We are in the process of building another room to have as our studio, which will be good but that’s still in the early stages.

We DJ at clubs in the city though and are soon to take it national/ international!

Where do you hope to take it?

Worldwide. It’s just a matter of time now.

 Favourite artist?

Taz: My favourite artist of all time has to be Drizzy Drake. I listen to a lot of rap music; mostly Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, Logic, and Drake, but I love all kinds of music! Lately I’ve taken a liking to Alison Wonderland, I feel like she is really raw and puts in all her energy into her performances. Diplo is another favourite and my top two djs that I’ve seen live are Showtek and Whatsonot so I really love those guys.
For djing we play psytrance and minimal so my favourite artists are probably Mandragora, Comah and R3ckzet.

There are a lot of artists there but I am missing a lot too. I find it hard to narrow it down because every artist I listen too brings something to the table that another lacks and that’s what I love about music.

Lauren: Personally my music taste varies from my love of some incredible triple j artists all the way to my psy-trance favourites! I’d probably say Banks, Gonzi and Drake are top 3 though!

 Favourite food?

Taz: Pasta, tacos, baked beans on toast, and every desert on the planet. Especially Nutella Pizza.
Lauren: Garlic bread- there’s no time in the world I think it’s inappropriate to be eating.

What do you get up to in your down time?

Without sounding too cheesy we don’t really get much downtime. Whenever we sit on the couch to watch some tv we are always doing something productive!

When we do take a break we are usually at the gym, spending our money on clothes or going out for desert.

 Any incriminating stories?

We don’t really have any badass stories….
We are considering changing our IP address so we can get US Netflix…. But that’s as bad as it gets!

 What’s up and coming?

In the next few months we are releasing our first original track that we worked on with a friend from New York City. So excited for that!
Just picked up a residency at Black Market so we play there every Saturday night, and hopefully some more regularly gigs in the near future.

 Cactus Essential?

We love oversized tees – I especially love the ‘summer lovin’ tee but Laurens fave is the ‘loyalty to the land tee’. We are so keen for the new range coming in, definitely getting our hands on the tall tees!

FOYNES

Who are you?

My name’s Nic. I’m also known as Foynes, but not by many as of yet - I’ll hopefully do something about that this year!

I grew up in Daylesford listening to late ’90s / early ‘00s hip hop. I can still remember where I was when I first heard Kanye’s ‘College Dropout’ and it was so weird and different at the time. From there I discovered how Kanye made his beats, via sampling, and that got me intrigued into making beats myself. So I sometimes made shitty hip hop beats up until about 2012 when I started to get well an truly over where hip hop was heading. At about that time I started getting into electronic music and I discovered Flume (Massive cliches incoming). I loved that he used hip hop elements in his drums and sampling and it helped me realise the direction I’d like to take my music.

What do you do?

I hack away at my computer, with no apparent formula, in an attempt to make music. I usually start with a vocal sample but as I’ve improved over the past couple of years, I’ve began starting with writing the music first and then adding samples later. It’s easier writing chords that way.

Where do you do it?

I’ve not long bought a desk and some studio monitors for my room, but before that I’d just hang out on my bed and use Beats by Dre headphones. It’s pretty safe to say that my sound has Improved a fair bit since sorting myself out with a decent set-up.

What’s up and coming?

Well, Cactus… I have four ripping tracks that are nearing completion for an EP this year. Each track on it is better than anything else I’ve made before, so I’m pretty excited to get it out. It features some sick talent; Vincent Coleman, Back Back Forward Punch, Henry Green and my old m8s AViVAA. Coinciding with the EP, I’m hoping to design a few Foynes long sleeve tees to release.

Where do you hope to take it?

To the Matthew’s Bridge… I hope there are some ex-Limp Bizkit fans that got that reference.

But in all seriousness, all I’m hoping for at the moment is to get a bit of play on Triple J / FBi this year and to play at Meredith one day. Anything else would be a bonus!

Favorite artist?

Even though he’s started to lose the plot lately, it’s still Kanye. Four out of his six albums are classics in my opinion and I can only hope that his next one will be, too. Although I doubt it will be.

My favourite electronic artist is either Jamie xx or Flume. Both are brilliant producers who have this infectious sound to their music.

Fav food?

Love me chook m8. Satay chook, tandoori chook, swiss chook… any form of marinated chook. And zingers.

What do you do in your down time?

I’m currently studying fitness three days a week at the moment, so when I’m not doing that I’m either working, watching some form of Marvel or DC comics series or hanging out with my dog Yeezy.

Incriminating stories?

There was this time at Falls where I thought the guys on motorbikes were demons, the flags were really tall girls and that the Koreans working on waste disposal were building a boardwalk amongst the trees…

Cactus essential?

I’ve been giving my Summer Lovin’ tee an absolute flogging since I got it; I only just washed it today for the first time! I’m pretty keen to get my hands on a Crooked tee, though. I’m a big fan of its design and you can never have too many white tees.
